Restaurant Review: Top BBQ Joint in Illinois
To reiterate, my husband (Peter) and I are bbq snobs – at least of the Illinois variety. Before you turn up your noses at us and say something along the lines of, “Illinois bbq has got nothin’ on Kansas City, Texas, or North Carolina,” consider the history of the award winning 17th Street Barbecue in Southern Illinois: http://www.17thstreetbarbecue.com/Home.aspx. That place is an Epicurious (Bon Appetit) award winning barbecue restaurant.
But we now may have a contender that can smoke 17th Street, an mind you, this “new” fangled place is also in Illinois.
Bull’s Pit Smoked BBQ, located in Kankakee: http://www.i57life.com/letseatout/merchants/view/34 is racking up not only excellent rib tips, (We almost always get the tips – due to good “bark” and an appropriate level of chewiness.) but also southern fried pickles (on the house, as a starter). That combo is hard to beat. They offer bbq nachos, which I ordered once and they were delicious! (-Then I had to go back to getting the tips.) And of course, they also do bbq chicken and the like. Their sauce is spot-on sweet and tangy. It’s noteworthy that Bull’s also does a Sunday brunch which I have yet to get to, but I dig the idea of a bbq joint offering brunch. As it is, their portions are generous, the service is decent, and it’s really not a bad trek off of I57. I hope you can make it there.
